“Day 7”

Of the 2026 Cavalcade.

Note: ‘Mules’ or ‘Ana-Mules’ (animals) as my brother from another mother, Miguel, calls them.

• We were hearing Elk bugling all night last night. Now we know why the area is called ‘Elk Valley’.
• Of course the Black Tailed deer that crossed the road in front of us while driving back from the Grove of Giants.
• Last evening, a covey of 15-20 Quail ran through our campsite.

1292 miles
182 miles today, still almost 4 hours of seat time.

We left Crescent City around 11:00.
We stopped in Orick to get fuel and try to get some Butane cartridges for our single burner stove (coffee). We went to a Tractor Supply, after I checked the web to ensure they carried them.
Nope, the manager told me they quit carrying butane all together because the homeless steal them all. Target doesn’t carry them either, although we did finally find them at a local outdoors store.

We jumped off US101 and rode old US101, which is two lanes, was bypassed when they increased 101 into 4 lanes.
It’s now called ‘Avenue of the Giants’. Riding that road, at 50mph is like riding a speeder bike through the Forrests on Endor.

We are ensconced in the town of Legget, at a ‘No tell Motel’.
We pulled in and were greeted by two elderly half-blind large dogs (70-100lbs), barking.
My darling bride immediately said
“Oh dear”
As she made the reservation site unseen.
An older Asian man (most likely Chinese) wearing an old sweatshirt, and a sarong wrapped around his waist greeted us.

“You stop by yesserday, and give me business card?”
“No” my bride answered
“I called yesterday and booked a room with a woman.”
“Oh! You talk with my wife!” He responded.
“You in room 4! Go ahead I’ll be there in a minute!”

The outside has seen better days, but it’s clean and cozy.
We’ve stayed in worse.
He did tell us not to leave food in our car top carrier, as bears are active here.
“A course, bear may not want to mess wif him!” He said laughing pointing at me.
I was certain we were the only folks here, I was incorrect. There’s a bearded gentleman of about 40, and a woman with special needs in residence, in different rooms of course.
