“They call me no show Jones,
They call him no show Jones
I’m seldom ever on,
He’s seldom ever on
The stage singing my songs
They call him no show Jones
They call me no show Jones”

‘Generation Jones’
I’ve talked about this briefly, I may have to make a video about it.
‘Explain Generation Jones’
Generation Jones refers to a distinct social cohort or micro-generation sandwiched between the Baby Boomers and Generation X. The term was coined in 1999 by American cultural commentator Jonathan Pontell, who argued that people born roughly from 1954 to 1965 form a separate group with their own shared experiences, attitudes, and personality traits—distinct from both the classic Boomers (typically 1946–1964 in the broader definition) and Gen X (1965–1980).
Birth Years
Most sources, including Pontell himself and Wikipedia, use 1954–1965 as the core range (sometimes slightly adjusted to mid-1950s to mid-1960s).
As of 2026, that places Generation Jones members in their early 60s to early 70s.
Why the Name “Generation Jones”?
The label carries multiple layers of meaning:
• It evokes the old phrase “keeping up with the Joneses” — reflecting a sense of consumerism, competition, and striving for the middle-class American Dream.
• It ties into 1970s slang “jonesin’” (popularized by this cohort as teens), meaning an intense craving, yearning, or addiction-like longing for something.
• “Jones” is a very common, anonymous surname, symbolizing this as a large, overlooked, “everyman” generation that often gets lumped in with Boomers but feels culturally invisible.
Pontell describes them as a generation with huge expectations raised in the optimistic 1960s that were largely left unfulfilled due to later economic and social realities.
Key Characteristics and Experiences
Generation Jones came of age in the 1970s (as teens/young adults), missing the peak of 1960s counterculture (Woodstock, major civil rights moments, etc.) but experiencing its aftermath.
Formative events often include:
• The end of the Vietnam War
• Watergate scandal → leading to lasting distrust of government and institutions
• 1970s economic struggles (oil crises, stagflation, high unemployment)
• Iran-Contra and other political disillusionments
• Entering the workforce during Reagan-era economic shifts, job competition, and reduced opportunities compared to earlier Boomers
This produced a distinct psychological and cultural profile:
• More pragmatic, realistic, and cynical than idealistic Boomers
• Less purely cynical or ironic than Gen X
• A mix of lingering optimism with disappointment — often “jonesing” for the better future they were promised but never fully received
• Balanced mainstream qualities between Boomer idealism and Xer skepticism
• Greater pessimism, distrust of authority, and focus on personal survival/hustling in tough economic times
Why It’s Considered Distinct
Many experts and Pontell argue that shared formative experiences (not just birth rates) define generations. Early Boomers (1946–1953/54) grew up in prosperity and 1960s idealism, while later ones (often called Gen Jones) faced a harsher transition to adulthood. This group is sometimes called the “lost” or “forgotten” generation because it’s frequently absorbed into “Boomer” statistics or overlooked entirely.
In short, Generation Jones captures that in-between feeling — too young to be full Boomers, too old to be Gen X — marked by high hopes followed by a reality check, resulting in a grounded, yearning, pragmatic mindset.

“The ‘Gods’ hate ‘hubris’”
hubris
/hyoo͞′brĭs/
noun
1.Overbearing pride or presumption; arrogance.
2. Excessive pride, presumption or arrogance(originally toward the gods).
3. Overbearing pride or presumption.
I’ve been accused of ‘hubris’…
Yes I know, you are shocked that a man as self deprecating and humble as I could ever be accused of ‘hubris’.
Be that as it may, the Iranian negotiators, displayed hubris in spades, at the opening of recent negotiations with the US.
They bragged that they ‘had’ enough ‘fissionable’ material to make 11 bombs…
As I entitled this post;
“The ‘Gods’ hate hubris.”
